In closed-cell foam, the foam cells are separately sealed and configured in a compact structure. The result is a dense material that is resistant to pressure, water, gases, and air. Closed-cell foams are more rigid and durable.
In contrast, open-cell foam has interconnected pores or cells that result in a lightweight material that can be compressed. Open-cell foams are more flexible, making them ideal for applications that don’t require significant rigidity or durability. Note that open-cell foams aren’t as insulative as closed-cell foams.
